Me & Him, Him & Me

memmI think I shared this photo on Instabook or Facegram or Twitbook or Instaface or one of those crazy places I tend to share family photos, but I don’t remember posting it here. I wanted to share it because it’s a nice memory from our family trip this summer, and also because this guy and I have been married a long time—long enough, in fact, that we have a daughter getting ready to go to college, which is completely puzzling to us considering we just started dating a year ago.

By the way: I would love to think I’m an experienced enough blogger not to get in a rut with posting on one particular topic over and over and over. But right now, there is no other topic than Alex going to college. I pick up the morning paper and the headline reads “FOUR MORE DAYS.” I turn on the news and the anchor is saying “IN FOUR MORE DAYS, ALEX IS GOING TO COLLEGE.” I turn on C-Span and the U.S. House of Representative is discussing the fact that Alex is going to college in four days. It’s the only news that’s fit to print around here, and I will be hard pressed to blog about another topic until next Monday, when we’ll all wake up in our house on the ranch with one less member of our family. Then I promise you I will blog about a different topic.

I think.

Oh, and I don’t pick up the morning paper. And that’s because I live in the country and there are no morning papers.

But you get the idea.

Yep, Alex goes to college this weekend. And in three years, we’ll likely be doing this same thing with Paige…then Bryce after that and Todd after that. And just as suddenly as I became smitten with a Wrangler-wearing, bottled beer-sipping cowboy in a bar in my hometown so many years ago, it will just be the two of us again.

We’ll probably look at each other, laugh, and say about the previous 25-plus years of raising kids: “Wow…what in the world just happened?”

And maybe we’ll share a bottled beer or two, just for old times’ sake.
