Surprise!

UnsaddlingToday is my baby Todd’s eleventh (whaaaa?) birthday, and he just left to work cattle with Marlboro Man and his siblings. Todd believes that they are simply working cattle today and that this particular birthday will be a low-key one that will involve a cupcake or two and a present or two with his immediate family tonight after dinner. Even though, as the youngest of four, he’s used to taking one for the team and going with the flow, I could tell last night when I was wishing him “Happy Birthday Eve,” as my mom always used to do for me, that he was looking forward to a future year when perhaps his birthday plans might be on a slightly grander scale.

Little does he know—and it’s very safe to say this now because he’s on his horse in a pasture, doesn’t have a cell phone and therefore can’t access the internet, and his siblings have been sworn to secrecy—that when he and Marlboro Man stop by the Lodge at lunchtime to get a quick drink and a snack, a bunch of his close friends, cousins, and siblings (who are leaving the cattle working early under the guise of heading to a different pasture to gather more cattle) are going to jump out and surprise him with a very unexpected lunchtime birthday party.

I love surprising Todd, because he’s never able to conceal his excitement or downplay his enthusiasm.

I also love showing Todd how loved and special he is to all of us. Because he is.

Thank you for letting me share this with you this morning. It’s been hard keeping it a secret and I really needed to let the cat out of the bag. Ha!

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go pre-scoop nine thousand scoops of various flavors of ice cream for the six-food brownie sundae I’ve got planned.

(At this point, a simple cupcake or two is sounding pretty good…)

Love,

Todd’s Mama
